Give one word a little more room

A small vocabulary conversation, connected to meaning.

Kindergarten–grade 3. This is a language discussion, not a substitute for students reading connected text.

Try this starting point

1. Choose a useful word from a text you are discussing.
2. Explain it in accessible language and give an example in a familiar context.
3. Invite students to offer or choose another example, then revisit the word in a later conversation.

Keep in mind

• Check understanding through examples rather than asking only whether everyone understands.
• Use multilingual connections when helpful; do not infer ability from confidence speaking aloud.
