Leave room for students to read
A read-aloud and student reading serve different purposes.
Kindergarten–grade 3. Choose accessible connected text aligned with instruction and individual support needs.
Try this starting point
- Plan an opportunity for each student to read connected text, not only listen to an adult read.
- Provide appropriate support and feedback on accuracy, phrasing and meaning.
- Use what you notice to plan the next instructional step rather than compare students publicly.
Keep in mind
- An adult read-aloud alone does not fulfill the student-reading recommendation.
- The example routine here has not been independently evaluated.
